President Droupadi Murmu is presented with Lisbons "City Key of Honour."

President Droupadi Murmu was conferred with the prestigious ‘City Key of Honour’ by the Mayor of Lisbon at a special ceremony held at the City Hall of Lisbon, Portugal, last evening.

In her address during the event, President Murmu extended heartfelt thanks to the Mayor and the people of Lisbon for the warm gesture. She praised Lisbon for its openness, the warmth of its people, and a culture rooted in tolerance and respect for diversity.

Later, President Murmu also attended a banquet hosted in her honour by the President of Portugal, H.E. Mr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the Palacio da Ajuda.

Celebrating Centuries 

In her banquet speech, President Murmu highlighted the deep-rooted cultural connections between India and Portugal, spanning centuries. She noted that the shared heritage is evident in architecture, historical landmarks, languages, and even culinary traditions.

50 Years of Bilateral Relations

She pointed out that the year holds special importance as it marks the 50th anniversary of India-Portugal diplomatic relations. President Murmu expressed optimism that the strong historical ties are evolving into a modern, dynamic, and visionary partnership across a range of sectors.

India as a Knowledge-Based Economy

Emphasising India’s progress as a knowledge-based economy, she said the country is advancing rapidly in science, technology, ICT, digital infrastructure, start-ups, and innovation — aiming to create an inclusive and sustainable development model.

Highlighting Portugal as a key partner, President Murmu acknowledged its constructive role in strengthening India’s engagement with the European Union. She expressed confidence that India-Portugal ties would deepen further in the years ahead, benefitting not only both nations but contributing positively to the wider global community.
