India Test-Fires the Agni-V Missile Successfully

India's strategic deterrence capabilities have been further strengthened with the successful test launch of its Agni-V intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). On April 1, 2025, the nuclear-capable missile was launched from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.

Important attributes of Agni-V:
With a range of more than 5,500 kilometers, it is India's longest-range missile, able to penetrate far into Asia and portions of Europe.
Mach 24 (24 times the speed of sound) is the speed at which it travels.
Warhead Capability: Able to transport up to 1.5 tons of conventional and nuclear warheads.
Advanced MIRV Technology: Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles (MIRVs), which enable a single missile to strike multiple targets, were reportedly included in this test.
Road & Rail Mobility: Its strategic flexibility is increased by the ability to be launched from mobile launchers.

The test's strategic importance
Strengthening of National Security: enhances India's capacity to deter nuclear threats, particularly from China and Pakistan.
Worldwide Effects: shows off India's developing missile technology and defense innovations internationally.
Message to Rivals: Highlights India's capacity to launch an attack far into enemy territory if necessary.
Responses:
The test was hailed as a "historic milestone" in India's defense capabilities by the defense minister.

Global Experts: According to some defense analysts, this will change the balance of power in the region, especially with regard to China.

Opposition Parties: While applauding the accomplishment, some political figures have called for attention to be paid to threats to domestic security as well.
India's attempts to update its missile technology and preserve a credible deterrent have advanced significantly with this test. In order to further improve its capabilities, more tests are anticipated in the upcoming months.
