Low pressure becomes less marked; IMD issues orange and yellow alert for thunderstorms in Odisha

The Low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal has become less marked. However, the associated cyclonic circulation persists over the same area and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday.

As per IMD, several parts of Odisha will experience thunderstorms with lightning while orange and yellow warnings for several districts have been issued.

“There will be no large change in the maximum temperature (day temperature) during the next 4 to 5 days over the districts of Odisha. Maximum temperature (day temperature) very likely to be equal and above 40 degrees C in the isolated pockets districts of Bolangir, Sundargarh,” said IMD.

Day 1 (Valid upto 0830 hrs IST of 12.04.2025)

Orange Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50- 60 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at a few places over the districts of Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40- 50 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Nawarangapur,Kalahandi.

Day 3 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 13.04.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 14.04.2025)

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30- 40 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at a few places over the districts of Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Keonjhargarh, Puri.

Day 4 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 14.04.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 15.04.2025)

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30- 40 kmph very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh.

Day 5 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 15.04.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 16.04.2025)

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40- 50 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Boudh, Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar.
