Odisha's rural and urban landscapes are about to undergo significant change as the BJP government led by Mohan Majhi presents a bold new budget. In order to create a new metropolis in Bhubaneswar that is comparable to the thriving city of Hyderabad, this initiative allots a substantial Rs 408 crore.
The ambitious plan, which draws inspiration from Hyderabad's success as a major IT hub, aims to build a new Bhubaneswar to promote urban development and economic growth. In keeping with this goal, the Odisha BJP, led by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, also intends to create five tri-city clusters out of 15 cities.
New Satellite City within Bhubaneswar
A strategic initiative is underway to develop a new satellite city within Bhubaneswar. Spanning 322 hectares, the project is expected to bolster the region's infrastructure across multiple sectors, with a particular focus on IT. Inspired by Hyderabad’s urban model, this development forms a part of the state government's comprehensive infrastructure enhancement plan.
This move is anticipated to attract significant investments and foster a plethora of employment opportunities. A generous allocation of Rs 408 crore has been set aside to support the establishment of this flourishing urban centre. This apart, the Odisha government is also prioritising the swift completion of the Metro. This metropolitan expansion will also include a new ring road, to streamline the traffic flow.
Transforming Urban Towns into Economic Hubs
Additionally, the Odisha government is set to invigorate urban development, with a budget allocation of Rs 1,100 crore. This initiative aims to transform several city regions into economic powerhouses. The plan includes the enhancement of five urban corridors: Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri, Sambalpur-Jharsuguda-Baragarh, Jeypore-Sunabeda-Koraput, Chatrapur-Brahmapur-Gopalpur, and Keonjhar-Badbil-Joda. These regions are envisioned as future economic hubs, critical to boosting local economies and infrastructure.
Under the scheme, the government will focus on the development of creation centres and tourism circuits. There will also be significant advancements in logistics, higher education facilities, and medical services. Odisha's vision also includes multiple iconic infrastructure projects, intended to enhance connectivity and improve public services across the targeted regions.
What CM Mohan Majhi Said On the Ambitious Projects?
“We are planning to construct a new city within Bhubaneswar and land for the purpose has already been identified. Our plan is to transform Bhubaneswar in the parallels of Hyderabad. Now, ring roads are also currently in works to avoid traffic congestion. This development is expected to boost local employment opportunities and promote infrastructural advancements, bringing substantial benefits to our Capital city,” the CM stated.
“This apart, we will transform Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri into an economic hub. Moreover, Sambalpur-Jharsuguda-Baragarh, Jeypore-Sunabeda-Koraput, Chatrapur-Brahmapur-Gopalpur, and Keonjhar-Badbil-Joda will also be developed in the similar manner,” the CM added.
Housing & Urban Development Minister’s Remarks:
“We have signed a MoU to prevent flooding, entry of flood waters to residences and houses and drainage problems in Bhubaneswar for Rs 8 crore. They will prepare the DPR and submit for verification, following which the transformation work will begin,” Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra said.
“Other new towns will be planned with all basic facilities including parks, sewerage and proper road facilities,” the Minister added.
