In a bold move to reshape the US electoral system, former President Donald Trump signed an executive order calling for significant changes in how elections are conducted in the country.
Key Reforms Outlined in the Executive Order
The order mandates voters to prove their American citizenship, ensures that only mail-in or absentee ballots received by Election Day are counted, and prohibits non-US citizens from donating to certain elections.
Trump Cites India and Brazil as Election Models
Trump referenced election practices in India and Brazil, arguing that the US lacks fundamental security measures that these nations already enforce. “India and Brazil are tying voter identification to a biometric database, while the United States largely relies on self-attestation for citizenship,” he noted.
Paper Ballots and Ballot Processing Concerns
Criticizing the inconsistent approach to ballot processing in the US, Trump compared it to Germany and Canada, which require paper ballots for vote tabulation. "Germany and Canada mandate paper ballots when counting votes, while the United States has a patchwork of methods that often lack basic chain-of-custody protections," he emphasized.
Limitations on Mail-in Voting
The executive order also seeks to address concerns regarding mail-in voting. Trump pointed out that countries like Denmark and Sweden restrict mail-in ballots to those who physically cannot vote in person and do not accept late-arriving ballots, even if postmarked before Election Day.
"Many American elections now feature mass voting by mail, with officials accepting ballots without postmarks or those received well after Election Day," Trump added.
Ensuring Election Integrity
The move is part of Trump’s ongoing efforts to restore what he believes to be the integrity of US elections, which he has frequently claimed were compromised in 2020. He stressed that "free, fair, and honest elections, unmarred by fraud, errors, or suspicion, are fundamental to maintaining our constitutional Republic."
“The right of American citizens to have their votes properly counted and tabulated, without illegal dilution, is vital to determining the rightful winner of an election,” Trump stated.
