Discover how the cultivation of roses is empowering tribal women in Odisha and changing lives.

Under the leadership of tribal women, rose cultivation is booming in the scenic hills of Odisha's Rayagada district. These hilly villages are being turned into a thriving rose garden as a result of this first-of-its-kind project in the tribally dominated district, which is also empowering local women.

These enterprising women have started the inspiring project of growing roses on an acre of land, thanks to training from the Gunupur Krishi Vigyan Kendra, a local agricultural science center. The Odisha Livelihoods Mission (OLM) and the block administration are fully supporting their efforts.

The project took flight with the importation of 13,000 saplings from Pune, a well-known hub for rose farming. These saplings have now blossomed into thriving rose plants that are ready for market.

The flowers are fetching prices of between five and ten rupees each at the local market, generating substantial profits. This initiative not only beautifies the area but also provides a significant boost to the local economy and empowers the women with an independent source of income.

Empowerment of Tribal Women:

There was a time when these women made a living by gathering forest products. Now, these women have embraced the opportunity, finding not only financial gain but significant satisfaction in their new enterprise. By mastering the art of rose cultivation, they have extended their expertise to the production of rose water, adding value to their agricultural output.

Encouragement from Government:

“We would earn our livelihood by gathering forest products and fish farming. However, BDO and OLM encouraged us to get into rose cultivation and also provided us with necessary training. When the flowers are ready, we sell it in the local market and earn substantial profits,” a woman farmer, Rajani Kadraka said.

Likewise, another woman said, “We were provided with training in Gunpur. We have taken one acre agricultural land on lease and doing rose cultivation. We are also making efforts to produce rose water.”

When contacted, Ramnaguda BDO Pradyumna Mandal stated that he was happy for the women and wishes to add value and help them with proper marketing of their produce in the future.
