As many as five locations in Odisha recorded temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, continuing the extreme cold and chill that began at the beginning of the year. The lowest recorded temperatures were 4 degrees Celsius in G. Udayagiri of Kandhamal and 4.5 degrees Celsius in Semiliguda of Koraput districts.
Five other major settlements either fell below or hovered around 10 degrees Celsius, according to a weather report released by the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Bhubaneswar Centre. Phulbani had the lowest minimum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius out of all of them. Jharsuguda (7.7), Rourkela (7.2), and Daringbadi (9) came next.
Cuttack recorded 13.5 degrees Celsius that same night, while Bhubaneswar saw the temperature drop to 13.2 degrees.
Incidentally, cold wave conditions returned to the state on January 17 after a brief rise in temperature owing to western disturbances. However, since their onset, temperatures have dropped sharply in many places, with the state capital witnessing the most noticeable effect.
