Rourkela, Odisha's renowned Steel City, is poised for a significant transformation aimed at enhancing its urban infrastructure and tourism appeal.
The plans follow after the Sundargarh district administration unveiled an ambitious plan to develop 27 tourism sites in the city, including several of the city, and the Odisha government’s infra boost spanning hundreds of crores.
The initiative seeks to diversify Rourkela's industrial image by spotlighting its cultural, natural, and infrastructural assets with key projects, including the redevelopment of TISCO Pond and Durgapur Hill, as well as enhancements like the Panposh Railway Station upgrade and the construction of a suspension bridge at Vedvyas Dham.
Collectively, these efforts aim to position Rourkela as a multifaceted destination, blending industrial heritage with enriched tourism experiences.
Panposh Railway Station: Gateway to Enhanced Connectivity
The redevelopment of Panposh Railway Station as an outer station for Rourkela is a strategic move to decongest the main Rourkela Junction and improve connectivity. Notably, this initiative draws inspiration from the successful transformation of Adityapur station in Jharkhand's Tatanagar.
The plan includes the development of the Lathikata-Kalunga freight railway line, which will divert freight traffic away from Rourkela Junction, thereby facilitating the initiation of passenger services from Panposh, making Rourkela more accessible.
Vedvyas Dham Suspension Bridge: A New Landmark for Tourism
In a bid to boost tourism, the Odisha government has proposed a Rs 60 crore suspension bridge connecting Vedvyas Dham with Panposh.
Vedvyas Dham is a significant cultural, religious, and heritage site in Sundargarh, attracting numerous devotees and tourists annually. The proposed bridge aims to provide direct access to this sacred site, enhancing the pilgrimage experience and promoting local tourism.
The project is currently awaiting approval, with plans to commence construction upon receiving the necessary sanctions.
Stormwater Drainage System: Addressing Waterlogging Challenges
Rourkela has long grappled with waterlogging issues, particularly during the monsoon season. To combat this, Rourkela Smart City Limited (RSCL) approved the construction of a comprehensive stormwater drainage system in March 2025.
According to the available reports, the project will benefit flood-prone areas such as Dayanand Nagar, PK Das Colony, Burutola, and Jagannath Colony.
TISCO Pond Transformation: From Quarry to Recreational Hub
An abandoned quarry pit, known as TISCO Pond, is set to undergo a remarkable transformation into a recreational hub. With a budget allocation of Rs 20.92 crore, the redevelopment plans include the construction of roads, pedestrian pathways, kiosks, landscaping, and other infrastructure improvements.
Bus Terminal Redevelopment: Modernizing Urban Transit Facilities
The existing bus terminal near Bisra Square, established in the early 1990s, has become inadequate due to increased commuter demand and infrastructural decay. Recognizing the need for modernization, plans are underway to redevelop this facility into an ultra-modern bus terminus.
The proposed terminal will feature enhanced amenities to accommodate the growing number of commuters, thereby improving the overall travel experience and reducing congestion in the city center.
Durgapur Hill: Revitalizing Urban Green Spaces
A reserve forest area within Rourkela, Durgapur Hill has suffered environmental degradation over the past four decades due to unauthorized settlements and deforestation. In response, a mega watershed project covering 850 acres with an investment of approximately Rs 2 crore has been launched.
The project includes the creation of water harvesting structures, check dams, stone walling, and extensive plantation efforts.
As Rourkela embarks on this transformative journey of infrastructural development with tourism initiatives, it aims to leverage its unique blend of industrial heritage and cultural assets. Further, it stands set to emerge as a dynamic destination offering diverse experiences to visitors and a higher quality of life to its residents.
