The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Warning for six districts in Odisha on Tuesday, May 7 and 8, due to thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind. Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Kandhamal are these districts.
Furthermore, up to 14 districts in Odisha have received a Yellow Warning for wind, thunderstorms, and lightning from the regional meteorological department in Bhubaneswar.
Rainfall caused by Nor’westers is expected in several parts of the State through May 10, according to the IMD’s prediction. As a result, during the next three to four days, the daytime temperature in the majority of the State will drop by four to six degrees Celsius.
“Some areas of the districts of Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, and Bolangir are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall and a light to moderate thunderstorm with gusty wind speeds reaching 40 to 50 kmph over the next three hours,” according to the IMD bulletin on Tuesday.
The bulletin went on, “Within the next three hours, certain areas of the districts of Khordha (including Bhubaneswar), Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Balasore, Sundargarh, Bhadrak, and Mayurbhanj are likely to experience light to moderate thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rain.”
In order to protect themselves from lightning strikes, IMD has advised people to keep an eye on the weather for worsening conditions and to be prepared to relocate to safer areas.
Notably, following a protracted heat wave spell, the Nor’wester rains have provided much-needed respite from the searing heat. On Monday afternoon, residents of Bhubaneswar saw rain and then strong winds pelting the city.
