On Friday, the Odisha government declared that only one person had passed away from sunstroke this season. The only reported sunstroke victim comes from the Balasore district, according to Public Health Director Niranjan Mishra.
Due to the current heat wave conditions that are occurring throughout the state of Odisha, 71 cases of heat-related illness have been reported from various parts of the state. Mishra states that the district of Sundargarh has reported the highest number of heat-related illness cases—35—with seven cases each from Mayurbhanj and Angul.
Officials from the Health Department advised people to exercise caution because of the state’s current heat wave. Precautions should be taken especially for vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and sick individuals. Moving outside in the intense heat during the day’s peak hours (between 1100 and 1500 IST) is advised.
