Geographical Indication (GI) designations have been applied to six additional Uttar Pradeshi products.
Among them is the well-known “Tirangi Barfi” from Kashi, a tricolored candy that independence fighters sold to make a point during the Quit India Movement.
On Tuesday, the Banaras Tirangi Barfi and the other five Uttar Pradesh products received certification from the GI Registry.
Uttar Pradesh now has 75 GI-tagged products, more than any other state in India, even with the addition of these six new products.
Tamil Nadu comes in second with 58 GI items.
Banaras Metal Casting Craft, Lakhimpur Kheri Tharu Embroidery, Bareilly Cane and Bamboo Craft, Bareilly Zardozi Craft, and Pilkhuwa Hand Block Print Textile are among the other Uttar Pradesh-based products that have obtained certification.
“On Tuesday, two well-known Varanasi products—the Tirangi Barfi and Metal Casting Craft—were awarded GI certification,” stated GI specialist Padma Shri Rajnikant.
As the Human Welfare Association’s general secretary, he has been instrumental in getting GI tags for 148 producers in 14 states and Union Territories, including the Northeast, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
“The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow office supported these six GI tags,” Rajnikant stated. This accomplishment confirms UP’s status as the top state for GI products.
The state’s sole GI product in 2008–09 was “Allahabad Surkha Amrood.”
