Regarding doctorate admissions for the 2024–2024 academic year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a significant notice. According to the most recent announcement from UGC, starting with the upcoming academic session 2024–2025, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) may use the results of the National Eligibility Test (NET) in lieu of administering entrance exams for admission to Ph.D. programmes.
According to the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, admission to Ph.D. programmes is contingent upon an interview for candidates who meet the requirements for fellowship or scholarship in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE/CEED and comparable national-level exams.
Furthermore, HEIs administer entrance exams, which necessitate multiple entrance exam writing from students applying to Ph.D. programmes.
“To help students with one national entrance test for admission to Ph.D. as part of the implementation of NEP 2020, the Commission decided that from the academic session 2024-25 onwards, the NET score can be used for admissions to Ph.D. programmes in place of entrance tests conducted by different universities/ HEIs,” the notice stated.
