Animal lovers will be saddened to learn that on Saturday, 18-year-old tiger “Nandan” passed away at the Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar.
The large feline had been receiving treatment for age-related problems for a few days, according to reports. The orthopaedic department was treating it for a waist-related issue. It passed away in enclosure number 31 of the zoo.
On March 24, 2013, it was first seen in the vicinity of the zoo’s white tiger safari area. After that, it was regularly seen in the zoo. Later, the Central Zoo Authority in New Delhi granted permission for the tiger to be kept in the zoo and given the name “Nandan.”
When it was imprisoned, it was only seven years old.
According to zoo sources, Nandan was a key contributor to the conservation breeding programme, having sired nine cubs from two tigresses over the course of three litters.
It sired one litter with tigress Ankita (three females and one male cub named Jayashree, Shree, Trupti, and Amit on February 17, 2023) and two litters with tigress Magha (two male cubs named Bahubali and Kundan on April 20, 2016; two males and one female cub named Abhay Bibek and Sohini on April 14, 2021).
