Thiruvananthapuram, June 24 (IANS)—On Monday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s resolution to rename the state of Kerala as “Keralam” was unanimously approved by the opposition and treasury benches of the Kerala Assembly, marking a rare moment of unanimity on the floor.
The resolution is currently being forwarded to the Centre for approval.
Interestingly, in August of last year, a resolution very similar to this one was passed by a unanimous vote and forwarded to the Centre, requesting “immediate steps” to amend the state’s name in accordance with Article 3 of the Constitution, which deals with the creation of states and any changes to their boundaries, areas, or names.
However, a technical objection prevented the resolution from being implemented, and in light of this, the Assembly on Monday chose to approve a new resolution.
