Under heavy security, polling for Pakistan’s general elections got underway on Thursday at 90,000 polling places nationwide.
Local time voting started at 8:00 a.m. and will run until 5 p.m.
Mobile internet services were abruptly halted nationwide minutes before polls opened, according to Dawn.
The nation’s interior minister stated, “The action has been taken as a result of the recent surge in terrorist activities.”
Polling places have been staffed since Wednesday morning, according to the Islamabad police, and security is in place.
On the same day, votes for the four provincial assemblies will be cast.
More than half of the nation’s population, or over 128 million individuals, are eligible to vote in the general elections.
The ECP stated that although elections were scheduled to be held for 266 seats in the lower house, one of the seats had been postponed because of a candidate’s passing.
