In the Odisha market, the cost of vegetables has increased dramatically in addition to that of other necessities like rice, dal, edible oil, wheat, flour, and other groceries.
Lower middle-class and economically disadvantaged families have seen their budgets impacted by the skyrocketing costs of vegetables and other necessities.
Vegetables that were sold at the Chhatra Bazar market in Cuttack a few days ago for Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg are reportedly now being sold for Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg.
The cost of bitter gourd has skyrocketed to Rs 80 per kg, while the price of brinjal has now increased to Rs 50 per kg. In a similar vein, the cost of onions and pointed gourds has increased to Rs 40 and Rs 50 per kg, respectively.
The cost per kilogramme of ridge gourd has increased to Rs 50. All vegetable prices, excluding potatoes, have increased dramatically.
Vegetable prices are trending upward not only in Cuttack but also in the Berhampur market. The majority of vegetables now cost more than Rs 50. Spine gourd is now available for Rs 70 per kg, while okra has increased in price to Rs 50 per kg.
