When hundreds of jellyfish carcasses were discovered strewn across Puri’s Digabareni beach on Tuesday, locals, visitors, and environmentalists became concerned.
When some locals and visitors went to the beach on Tuesday morning, they were treated to an unexpected sight. Numerous jellyfish carcasses were observed washing up on the shore.
People who come into contact with jellyfish experience skin issues like itching. But as of yet, no such complaint has been filed.
Environmentalists were alarmed by the sheer quantity of these marine animals that were dying, though.
“Jellyfish lack any moving organs. Thus, the wind and waves propel them forward. It is illegal to fish here, so the reason for their demise is unknown. Marine Fisheries Department scientist Dr. Rajesh Pradhan stated, “I can only comment after an investigation.
Olive Ridley turtle carcasses were discovered swarming the beach at Digabaerni Khunti at the same time. Days later, they were discovered unhygienically laying together on the beach.
“An order will soon be issued to get the beach cleared,” stated Prajnashree Priyambada, the Puri Municipality’s executive officer, in response to a message.
