CM of Odisha announces Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia after 5 people are killed in lightning strike

On Wednesday, lightning strikes in the districts of Bargarh and Balangir in Odisha resulted in the deaths of up to five people.

When the lightning struck, Sukhdev Banchor (58), Niroj Kumbhar (25), and Dhanurjya Nayak (45) of Dewandihi village in the Bargarh district sought refuge beneath a banyan tree close to the village. Following the lightning strike on Wednesday afternoon, two more people were injured in addition to the three who perished instantly.

In a different incident, while working in their paddy field, Suryakanti Kharsel (40) and her 18-year-old son Deepak from Chaulbanji village in the Balangir district perished from a lightning strike.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased persons.
