On Wednesday, Om Birla, the BJP MP from Kota-Bundi, was chosen as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for a second term in a row by voice vote.
Birla’s victory made him the first leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party to hold the prestigious post for two terms in a row.
Om Birla has been elected by voice vote to the position of Speaker of the Lok Sabha, according to Protem Speaker of the House Bhartruhari Mahtab.
After Birla took over, PM Narendra Modi and Leader of the Opposition in the Lower House, Rahul Gandhi, led him to the chair and congratulated him.
Om Birla was proposed for the position prior to the elections by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Amit Shah, and other NDA leaders.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) member Arvind Sawant suggested K. Suresh for the Speaker position on behalf of the Opposition alliance.
Nevertheless, with 297 MPs voting for Om Birla and 232 for the opposition, the NDA had the majority.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Birla was picked as the NDA’s candidate for the Speaker’s post. Union Minister Rajnath Singh and some senior leaders also tried to reach out to the leaders of opposition parties.
Rahul Gandhi had said that the Opposition would support the NDA candidate, but at the last moment, it announced Congress MP K. Suresh as its candidate.
