Bharat Ratna was bestowed upon Chaudhary Charan Singh, Narasimha Rao, and MS Swaminathan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, a renowned agricultural scientist, and former prime ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh and P.V. Narasimha Rao will be receiving the Bharat Ratna.

This was announced by the Prime Minister on his X handle.

We are happy to announce that Shri PV Narasimha Rao Garu, our former prime minister, will receive the Bharat Ratna.

Narasimha Rao Garu was a renowned statesman and scholar who rendered significant service to India in a number of roles. In addition to his work as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, he is also recognised for his many years as a member of the Legislative Assembly and Parliament. India’s economy advanced thanks in large part to his visionary leadership, which also laid a strong foundation for future growth and prosperity.

During his time as prime minister, Narasimha Rao Garu took important steps that helped India enter international markets and usher in a new phase of economic growth. In addition, his contributions to the fields of education, language, and foreign policy highlight his varied legacy as a leader who not only guided India through significant changes but also enhanced its intellectual and cultural legacy.”

PM Modi posted in Hindi on the X handle to announce Chaudhary Charan Singh’s award: “It is the good fortune of our government that former national prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh is being honoured with Bharat Ratna.” This honour is devoted to his unparalleled service to the nation. His whole life had been devoted to promoting the welfare and rights of farmers.

“He always provided a boost to nation-building, whether he was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the nation’s Home Minister, or even an MLA. He was also adamantly opposed to the Emergency. The entire country finds inspiration in his devotion to our farmer brothers and sisters and his upholding of democracy during the Emergency.”

A Bharat Ratna for agricultural scientist Dr. MS Swaminathan was also announced by Prime Minister Modi.

“The Government of India is extremely happy to award Dr. MS Swaminathan Ji the Bharat Ratna for his outstanding contributions to agriculture and farmer welfare in our country. He made exceptional efforts to modernise Indian agriculture and was crucial in helping the country become self-sufficient in agriculture during difficult times.

“We also acknowledge his invaluable work as a mentor and innovator who has inspired many students to learn and conduct research. In addition to revolutionising Indian agriculture, Dr. Swaminathan’s visionary leadership has guaranteed the prosperity and food security of the country. I had a close relationship with him and always appreciated his opinions and insights.
