Assam: Birubala Rabha, recipient of the Padma Shri, dies at age 75

Following a protracted fight with cancer, social activist and Padma Shri recipient Birubala Rabha passed away on Monday.

At Guwahati Medical College and Hospital’s State Cancer Institute, she passed away.

Rabha, 75, had spent the previous three years battling oesophageal cancer.

She had trouble swallowing food six months ago, so she had radiation, chemotherapy, and stenting.

On April 22, Rabha was readmitted to the hospital due to a worsening of her condition. On May 12, she was placed on a mechanical ventilator due to respiratory distress, which made her condition even worse.

She not only gained recognition but also battled against the evil of witch-hunting.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, offered condolences on Rabha’s passing.

“I am deeply distressed to learn about the passing away of Padma Shri Smt Birubala Rabha,” CM Sarma wrote on his X handle. Through her tireless efforts to eradicate social evils, she gave many women hope and self-assurance.”

She was a living example of courage in the face of adversity. “Assam will always be appreciative of her leadership in advancing society,” he continued.
