According to a senior official, the number of people killed in the stampede at a religious meeting in the Hathras region of Uttar Pradesh has increased to 121 on Wednesday.
The number of those hurt and hospitalised in Tuesday’s incident is 28, according to the Office of the Relief Commissioner.
It stated that 19 of the total deaths have not yet been identified.
In order to conceal evidence of a stampede, the devotees of the godman Narayan Sakar Hari threw the victims’ slippers and other possessions into fields with standing crops nearby, according to the UP Police’s FIR.
Dev Prakash Mathur, the event’s organiser, has been charged under BNS Sections 105, 110, 126, 223, and 238.
The offending Narayan Sakar Hari has not been mentioned in the FIR.
The incident happened during a “satsang” (prayer assembly) in Fhulrai village, under the Sikandrarau police station area of Hathras district. Over a lakh people, predominantly women, were reportedly present for the gathering, which was held on behalf of self-styled godman Narayan Sakar Hari.
